If you suddenly need to visit a hospital while travelling, working, studying or living in Korea, the most difficult part may begin after you have found the hospital. The booking screen is in Korean, the details are hard to explain over the phone, and many questions and instructions are exchanged quickly on site.

Sending only “Can I get a Chinese interpreter today?” can actually slow down the check. Availability depends first on which hospital you are visiting, where and when to meet, which language you need, and how much of the visit the interpreter should cover.

The more urgent the request, the more useful it is to send the essentials together instead of writing a long story. These eight details make it much easier to check whether an on-site hospital interpreter is available in Seoul today or tomorrow.

1. Clarify whether it is a medical emergency or an urgent scheduling request

“Urgent” can mean two different things. Your condition may require immediate medical attention, or your hospital appointment may already be confirmed and you have simply started looking for an interpreter very late.

If it is a medical emergency, do not delay medical care or emergency assistance while waiting to arrange a separate interpreter. Contact a medical provider or public emergency service first, and tell the hospital that you need language support where possible.

If you have an outpatient appointment, test or consultation today or tomorrow and need an on-site interpreter, send the information below so the schedule can be checked. An interpreter does not assess medical urgency, so the exact hospital and time are more useful than saying only, “I feel very unwell.”

2. Send the hospital name, exact branch and address together

Many hospitals and clinics in Seoul and Gangnam operate several branches under the same name. If you send only the brand name, more time is needed to confirm the correct location.

Include these details in your first message:

  • Full name of the hospital or clinic

  • Exact branch you will visit

  • Road address or map link sent by the hospital

  • Building floor and reception point, if provided

Forwarding the hospital’s booking message, chat screen or map link is usually safer than searching for the address again. Include the building name, floor or separate registration desk if these are shown.

3. Give four specific times, not just “morning” or “afternoon”

Timing determines whether a same-day interpreter can reach you. “I am going in the afternoon” is not enough to assess travel time or the likely end of the service.

State these times separately:

  1. The time you must arrive at the hospital

  2. The time you want to meet the interpreter

  3. The expected start of the consultation, test or appointment

  4. The expected end of the hospital visit

If you do not know the end time, ask the hospital for an estimate or say clearly that it is not yet known. If a long wait is possible, confirm the interpreter’s minimum booking period and whether an extension is possible.

4. State the language you actually need

“Chinese interpreter” may not be specific enough. Say whether you need Mandarin or Cantonese, as this affects who can be assigned. Mention in advance if English test results or documents also need to be reviewed.

If a family member or companion will attend, say whose appointment should be interpreted as the priority and whether the companion’s questions must also be relayed. Supporting one patient and handling questions from several people may require different preparation.

5. Say whether the hospital booking is already confirmed

If the hospital, branch and appointment time are already fixed, the interpreter does not need to spend time finding a provider and can focus on preparing for the on-site communication.

If you have chosen the hospital but the appointment is not yet confirmed, or you do not know which branch to visit, the request also involves booking confirmation or schedule coordination.

Choose one of these statuses in your first message:

  • Booking confirmed

  • Hospital chosen, not booked yet

  • Hospital has provided only an available arrival window

  • Hospital not chosen yet

An interpretation-only request and a request that also requires booking coordination may have different preparation times and scopes.

6. Mark the stages where you need support

“Hospital interpretation” does not mean the same scope for everyone. Some people need help only with registration; others need support through the doctor’s explanation, test instructions, quotation check, payment and collection of documents.

Select the stages you need:

  • Meet at the hospital entrance or reception

  • Registration and medical questionnaire

  • Consultation with the doctor

  • Test instructions

  • Explanation of items and quotation by the consultant

  • Final amount check before payment

  • Payment and receipt check

  • Instructions and follow-up contact details before leaving

Your accompanying interpreter learns your original plan, questions, budget and non-negotiables before the visit, checks each point during the consultation and continues to assist with follow-up communication after you leave.

7. Confirm when the fee changes, not only the hourly rate

Same-day requests may have different fee conditions because travel and preparation time are limited. Asking only “How much per hour?” does not reveal what happens if the hospital runs late or the booking needs to be extended.

Keep these terms in writing before confirming:

  • Minimum booking duration and base fee

  • Any transport or urgent-assignment charge

  • Whether waiting time counts towards the booked time

  • The billing unit for overtime

  • Whether an extension is possible if the hospital is delayed

  • Same-day rescheduling and cancellation terms

  • Whether document translation or later follow-up questions cost extra

Confirm both the base price and the conditions that change the final amount so you can estimate the total more accurately.

8. Share only the health information that is necessary

You do not need to send your full medical report or all your health information in the first availability message. Begin with the hospital, time, language, booking status and required stages.

If something must be conveyed to the doctor in advance, organise only the necessary details at the next step:

  • Previous consultations, treatments or tests the doctor must know about

  • Medication, allergies or other information the doctor needs to check

  • The question you most want answered today

  • Items you do not want to decide on immediately

  • Forms the hospital asked you to complete in advance

Do not post sensitive records in a public group chat or send them to people who do not need them. Confirm who needs the information and why, then share only the minimum required.

If you need an interpreter today, copy this format first

A short, complete message is usually more useful than a long explanation:

Hospital and branch: Exact address or map link: Visit date: Required arrival time: Expected end time: Required language: Mandarin / Cantonese / Other Booking status: Confirmed / Being confirmed / Not booked Required stages: Registration / Consultation / Tests / Quotation / Payment / Documents

Same-day availability depends on the interpreter’s current location, travel time, language and expected service duration. Do not stop at a simple “Yes, available”. Keep a written confirmation of who will arrive, where and when, and which stages are covered.

If the hospital is already booked, you can request on-site interpretation only

If the hospital and appointment are already confirmed, there is no need to compare hospitals again. MEI CHEONGDAM first checks the hospital, branch, arrival time, required language and scope, then explains the available schedule and fee conditions.

MEI confirms the branch, appointment time, pricing terms, and interpretation coverage with your booked provider, relays your questions accurately, and assists with follow-up communication.

The more urgent the request, the less useful it is to ask only, “Can you arrange Chinese?” Send the hospital, address, time and required scope together.

If you need an interpreter today or tomorrow, send the completed format above first. We will not promise an unconfirmed arrangement; we will check the actual travel time, service scope and fee terms before advising you.

Still have a question?

If anything is unclear while planning your trip to Korea, feel free to ask. You do not need to organise everything first — I’ll start with what I can confirm and help you sort it out.
