Are All Doctors at Korean Skin Clinics Dermatologists?

The short answer is that a clinic name alone is not enough. A name or sign containing “skin” or “dermatology” does not by itself confirm that the doctor assessing you or performing the procedure has specialist credentials in dermatology. The clinic name, displayed department and doctor's personal qualification should be checked separately.

Under Korea's standard domestic training route, a dermatologist first obtains a medical licence, then completes one year of internship and four years of dermatology residency training, passes the specialist examination and receives recognition from the Minister of Health and Welfare. Only a doctor with the relevant recognition may use the specialist title.

Specialist status reflects education and training, but it does not guarantee experience with a particular procedure, communication style or outcome. You still need to confirm who will assess you and who will perform the procedure.

Look beyond the clinic name and check these 4 points

  • Whether the doctor's recognised specialty is dermatology

  • Whether the doctor you booked will personally assess your skin

  • Whether the assessing doctor will also perform the procedure

  • Whether the doctor has relevant experience and can explain the plan clearly

Cross-checking a Korean skin-clinic doctor's name and specialist credentials

Besides the clinic's website, you can cross-check the doctor's name and location using the Korean Association of Dermatologists' specialist directory. A non-result in the directory alone is not conclusive proof that a doctor lacks the qualification; ask the clinic for the doctor's full name and specialist details, then check other official records as well.

How MEI organises information you can verify

When MEI CHEONGDAM shortlists clinics, we check the doctor's specialist credentials separately from who will assess you and who will perform the procedure. Qualifications do not guarantee results; they are one of the facts you can compare.
